JOB DESCRIPTION
The Systems Engineer II is a generalist role responsible for the successful design, development, and implementation of complex technical solutions. The incumbent will review specifications, assign tasks, and manage overall systems engineering requirements for various projects under the WGD Consulting lines of business. In collaboration with internal and external stakeholders, the incumbent will direct cross-functional teams in the development of technology strategy, system innovation, and efficiency. Under the direction of the Director, Engineering; the Systems Engineer II will, foster collaboration and maintain an efficient system engineering department capable of executing project objectives and corporate goals.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Apply technical oversight of systems engineering / system assurance, and/or specialized subject matter domains, including but not limited to Reliability, Availability, Maintainability, Safety (RAMS), systems security.
- Implement and maintain quality assurance processes to ensure systems meet or exceed performance, reliability, and security requirements.
- Produce accurate documentation with detailed analysis and informative summary reports of technical subject matter.
- Continuous review of documents related to systems integration and engineering (technical and non-technical) for change requests.
- Conduct peer reviews of technical output deliverables according to requirements and WGD quality guidelines.
- Maintain comprehensive organizational records, including any relevant documentation required for audits and compliance purposes.
- Ensure the delivery of systems and solutions comply with industry standards, regulations, and legal requirements.
- Conduct technical project meetings and present comprehensive reports to communicate findings.
- Track and report project progress, identifying potential risks and mitigation strategies to ensure the delivery of projects on time, within scope, and within budget.
- Gather engineering data for analysis, estimation, and proposals as directed by the Director, Engineering and WGD leadership.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams including engineers, analysts, and project managers to plan, execute and deliver complex engineering projects.
- Support subject matter experts (SME’s), analysts, and other personnel through the successful implementation of system integration practices.
- Contribute to the development and management of the systems engineering department by defining resource requirements/allocation for the efficient and cost-effective delivery of projects.
- Assess department skills through resource gap analysis, define action plans to reduce gaps.
- Actively participate in department hiring processes including candidate evaluation and recommendations.
- Mentor junior team members and assist in development of critical skills through WGD internal training and development initiatives.
GENERAL DUTIES
- Collaborate with the Director, Engineering to define, and implement internal engineering processes across the organization and ensure systems engineering efforts support organizational goals.
- Support the identification and implementation of new systems engineering technologies into production environments, including process/tool improvements.
- Demonstrate effective leadership and team management strategies that motivate, mentor, and guide team members to achieve organizational objectives.
- Abide by engineering quality objectives, identify opportunities for improvement, and implement corrective actions as required.
- Demonstrate an ability to navigate dynamic environments requiring flexibility and adaptability to accommodate change.
- Execute consistent communication both vertically and horizontally across the organization that fosters a positive and collaborative work environment.
- Conduct professional activities with integrity, care, and trustworthiness while maintaining compliance with internal and external guidelines.
- Positively represent WGD at various industry events, conferences and client engagements in support of and to propel WGD’s strategy.
- Remain up to date on industry standards and trends such as American Public Transportation Association (APTA), US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), European Norm (EN) / CENELEC, rail applicable standards, etc.
- Other position relevant duties as assigned by the Director, Engineering or Project Management Office (PMO) to support project operations.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Two to Five (2 – 5) years’ experience leading engineering teams conducting complex systems integration and testing projects.
- Five (5+) years’ experience in complex systems delivery for Light Transit Rail (LRT) and mass transit projects.
- Proven experience in systems engineering, with a track record of successful project delivery.
- Demonstrated self-starter and desire to take the initiative to accomplish project tasks.
- Familiarity with relevant IT/OT technologies and industry best practices.
- Development of leadership and managerial skills to model professional and departmental expectations.
- Excellent interpersonal skills that foster collaborative working relationships with colleagues, stakeholders, and clients.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize work to meet deadlines.
- Ability to work independently or collaboratively as required.
- Professional command of the English language in both spoken and written communications and presentation settings.
- Working knowledge of industry standards and processes, including CENELEC and INCOSE, is an asset.
- Sound knowledge of MS Office suite, including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Visio.
- Working knowledge of project management software, including Smartsheet and Microsoft Project, is an asset.
EDUCATION & CERTIFICATIONS
- Four (4) year Bachelor’s and/or two (2) year Master’s degree in an engineering discipline such as electrical, mechanical, systems or relevant equivalent discipline.
- Valid P.Eng. license in a Canadian Province, preferably APEGA
- INCOSE CSEP/ASEP certification an asset
- Project Management certification, including PMI PMP/CAPM, or Axelos Prince2, is an asset.
- Other professional memberships considered an asset.
