JOB DESCRIPTION

The Project Engineer, Systems Engineering is responsible for the successful design, development, and implementation of complex technical solutions. The incumbent will review specifications, develop system implementations involving the application of new and existing technologies, and actively contribute to various projects under the WGD Consulting umbrella. In collaboration with internal and external stakeholders, the incumbent will utilize their technical expertise, analytical skills and business acumen, and provide valuable interfacing functions during the design, development, and implementation of operational systems. Under the direction of the Director, Engineering; the Project Engineer, Systems Engineering will lead project works to achieve project objectives and corporate goals. 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support internal lines of business, where specialized domains may include: infrastructure engineering, systems engineering, system assurance, Information Technology (IT), Operational Technology (OT), software, networking, cyber security.
  • Prepare technical works according to defined engineering methodologies. Apply technical processes to implement system requirements and produce technology solutions that are fit for their intended functional purpose.
  • Conduct feasibility studies and impact analyses for proposed system changes.
  • Produce accurate documentation with detailed analyses and informative summary reports of technical subject matter.
  • Peer review of technical output deliverables according to technical requirements and WGD quality guidelines.
  • Actively conduct technical project meetings and present comprehensive reports to communicate findings.
  • Support technical queries, as they relate to the specific application.
  • Progress the execution and delivery of complex engineering projects, ensuring they are completed on time, within scope, and within budget.
  • Ensure the delivery of systems and solutions comply with industry standards, regulations, and legal requirements.
  • Implement and maintain quality assurance processes to ensure systems meet or exceed performance, reliability, and security standards.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including engineers, analysts, subject matter experts (SME’s), and project managers in project execution.
  • Work with the Director, Engineering and Project Management Office to implement internal engineering process across the organization as it applies to project agreements.
  • Other relevant duties as assigned by WGD Leadership to support project operations.
  • Foster sharing of best practices across the organization.

General duties to include:

  • Review of documents related to systems integration and engineering (technical and non-technical).
  • Execute consistent communication both vertically and horizontally across the organization that fosters a positive and collaborative work environment.
  • Monitor and escalate scope and commercial changes when action is required.
  • Maintain comprehensive organizational records, including any relevant documentation required for audits and compliance purposes.
  • Conduct business activities with integrity, care, and trustworthiness while maintaining compliance with internal and external guidelines.
  • Positively represent WGD at various engagements in support of and to propel WGD’s strategy.
  • Demonstrate a broad commitment to financial, social, and environmental impacts as they relate to organizational projects they support at all times.
  • Continuous review of industry trends and advancements to maintain relevant operational practices, procedures, and documentation standards.
  • Able to manage multiple projects and prioritize work to meet deadlines.
  • Able to navigate dynamic environments requiring flexibility and adaptability to accommodate change.
  • Remain up to date on information system standards such as American Public Transportation Association (APTA), US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), European Norm (EN) / CENELEC, rail applicable standards, etc.
  • Other position relevant duties as assigned by the Director, Engineering or Project Management Office (PMO) to support project operations.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Four (4+) years’ experience working in technical teams and delivery of project works.
  • Two (2+) years’ experience in Light Transit Rail (LRT) or transportation infrastructure projects.
  • Proven experience in systems engineering, with a track record of successful project delivery.
  • Working knowledge of system integration processes and methodology.
  • Strong analytical skills, with the ability to work with large/complex datasets, recognize patterns, and extract meaningful insights.
  • Meticulous attention to detail and the ability to distil complex technical information into simplified concepts.
  • Professional command of the English language in technical writing both spoken and written in all communications and presentation settings.
  • Current in industry trends, best practices and relevant technologies.
  • Desire to take initiative and proactive role in support of project responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively problem-solve using critical thinking and contingency planning.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to foster collaborative working relationships with colleagues, stakeholders and clients.
  • Ability to work independently or collaboratively in project teams as required.
  • Proficient knowledge of MS Office suite, including MS Project, Word, Excel, Visio, PowerPoint.
  • Working knowledge in data analysis/visualization, spreadsheet/database, and programming software tools, such as Excel, Python, SQL, Power BI, Smartsheet, or similar.
  • Working knowledge of CAD software tools, such as AutoCAD 2D or Revit 3D, or similar.
  • Project Management experience in medium to large infrastructural projects is an asset.

EDUCATION & CERTIFICATION:

  • Four (4) year Bachelor’s and/or two (2) year Master’s degree in an engineering discipline, such as electrical, mechanical, systems or relevant equivalent discipline.
  • Valid P.Eng. license in Ontario and/or other Provincial professional engineering designation.
  • Possession of INCOSE CSEP/ASEP, PMI PMP/CAPM, or Cisco CCNP/CCNA certifications are an asset.
