JOB DESCRIPTION

The Manager, Systems Engineering is responsible for the successful design, development, and implementation of complex technical solutions. The incumbent will review specifications, assign tasks, and manage overall systems engineering requirements for various projects under the WGD Consulting umbrella. In collaboration with internal and external stakeholders, the incumbent will direct cross-functional teams in the development of technology strategy, system innovation, and efficiency. Under the direction of the Director, Engineering; the Manager, Systems Engineering will develop, foster, and maintain an efficient system engineering department capable of executing project objectives and corporate goals. 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Project specific duties to include:

  • Collaborate with the Director, Engineering to define, modify, and implement internal engineering process across the organization as it applies to project agreements.
  • Direct subject matter experts (SME’s), analysts, and other personnel through the successful implementation of system integration practices.
  • Advise on the planning, execution, and delivery of complex engineering projects; ensuring they are completed on time, within scope, and within budget.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including engineers, analysts, and project managers to integrate individual components into larger systems.
  • Communicate the company’s vision within the engineering team through alignment of department practices and policies.
  • Collaborate with the Director, Engineering and executive leadership to define technology roadmaps and ensure systems engineering efforts support organizational goals.
  • Ensure the delivery of systems and solutions comply with industry standards, regulations, and legal requirements.
  • Implement and maintain quality assurance processes to ensure systems meet or exceed performance, reliability, and security standards.
  • Assist with the development and management of the budget/workload for the systems engineering department; ensuring efficient allocation of resources for cost-effective project delivery.
  • Establish engineering performance objectives, identify opportunities for improvement, and implement corrective actions as required.
  • Work closely with the company’s Project Management Office (PMO) and representatives to monitor key project metrics, and resource requirements.
  • Provide input and recommendations for assignment of project manager(s) to monitor progress, identify risks, and implement mitigation strategies.
  • Perform root cause analysis of problems and propose process/tool for improvements
  • Gather engineering data for analysis, estimation, and proposals as directed by the Director, Engineering and WGD leadership.
  • Analyze department skills through resource gap analysis and define action plans to reduce gaps for critical skills.

General duties to include:

  • Continuous review of documents related to systems integration and engineering (technical and non-technical) for change requests.
  • Execute consistent communication both vertically and horizontally across the organization that fosters a positive and collaborative work environment.
  • Apply proven leadership and team management strategies that motivate, mentor, and guide team members to achieve organizational objectives.
  • Maintain comprehensive organizational records, including any relevant documentation required for audits and compliance purposes.
  • Conduct business activities with integrity, care, and trustworthiness while maintaining compliance with internal and external guidelines.
  • Positively represent WGD at various industry events, conferences and client engagements in support of and to propel WGD’s strategy.
  • Demonstrate a broad commitment to financial, social, and environmental impacts as they relate to organizational projects they support at all times.
  • Continuous review of industry trends and advancements to maintain relevant operational practices, procedures, and documentation standards.
  • Able to manage multiple projects and prioritize work to meet deadlines.
  • Able to navigate dynamic environments requiring flexibility and adaptability to accommodate change.
  • Remain up to date on information system standards such as American Public Transportation Association (APTA), US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), European Norm (EN) / CENELEC, rail applicable standards, etc.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ten (10+) years’ experience managing engineering teams conducting complex systems integration and testing projects.
  • Five (5+) years’ experience in complex systems delivery for Light Transit Rail (LRT) and mass transit projects.
  • Proven experience in systems engineering, with a track record of successful project delivery.
  • Exemplary leadership and managerial skills, including performance management and mentoring activities.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to foster collaborative working relationships with colleagues, stakeholders, and clients.
  • Desire to take initiative and anticipate project requirements on a pro-active basis.
  • Professional command of the English language in both spoken and written communications and presentation settings.
  • Sound knowledge of MS Office suite, including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Visio.
  • Ability to work independently or collaboratively as required.
  • Familiarity with relevant technologies and industry best practices.
  • Working knowledge of CENELEC standards, RAMS analyses and INCOSE processes are assets.
  • Experience with Smartsheet is an asset.

EDUCATION & CERTIFICATION:

  • Four (4) year Bachelor’s and/or two (2) year Master’s degree in an engineering discipline such as electrical, mechanical, systems or relevant equivalent discipline.
  • Valid P.Eng. designation in Ontario. Other Provincial professional memberships considered an asset.
  • INCOSE CSEP/ASEP certification an asset
  • Possession of PMI PMP/CAPM, or Axelos Prince2 certification is an asset.
